How to move an Anki deck to Quizlet

  1. In Anki on a computer, click the gear next to the deck and choose Export (or use File > Export). Pick "Anki Deck Package (*.apkg)" and save the file. A shared deck you downloaded from AnkiWeb is already an .apkg file.
  2. Choose the file above or drop it on the box. Check the card count and the first few cards.
  3. Click Copy for Quizlet.
  4. In Quizlet, create a new flashcard set and click Import. Paste, keep Tab between term and definition and New line between cards, then import and save the set.

Why not just use Anki's plain-text export?

Anki can export a deck as plain text, and for a simple two-field deck you can paste that into Quizlet too. This page helps when that route gets in the way:

  • You only have the .apkg file, for example a shared deck, and no Anki desktop.
  • The deck has cloze cards. Anki exports them with the {{c1::...}} markup, which Quizlet shows as-is.
  • Fields contain formatting. HTML tags and [sound:...] references are removed here, so the Quizlet cards show clean text.
  • Notes have more than two fields. Quizlet has a term and a definition, so the extra fields are added to the definition instead of being lost.

What carries over

Each Anki note becomes one Quizlet card.

Kept:

  • The first field as the term, the other fields (one per line) as the definition.
  • Cloze notes, with the blanks on the term side and the full text on the definition.
  • Non-English text, including accents, Chinese, Japanese and Korean.
  • Line breaks inside a field. In the text for Quizlet they become " / ", because Quizlet's import reads one card per line. The CSV keeps them.

Not kept:

  • Images and audio. A side that is only an image shows [image].
  • Text styling such as bold, colours and highlights.
  • Review history, due dates, tags and the deck's subdeck structure.

A reversed note ("Basic (and reversed card)") becomes one card, not two: Quizlet can study either side. Notes that appear twice with the same text are included once.

If something goes wrong

"This is not an Anki deck file"
The file is not an .apkg or .colpkg. In Anki, export again and choose "Anki Deck Package (*.apkg)" as the format, not plain text.
Cards from several decks are mixed
The file holds more than one deck, such as a whole-collection .colpkg. Export each deck on its own to get one Quizlet set per deck.
Terms and definitions land in the wrong columns in Quizlet
In Quizlet's Import, choose Tab between term and definition and New line between cards.
A large deck takes a while
The whole file, including its images and audio, is opened in your browser. Decks of a few hundred megabytes can take a minute, or fail on a phone.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert an Anki deck to Quizlet?

Export the deck from Anki as an Anki Deck Package (.apkg), choose that file on this page and click Copy for Quizlet. In Quizlet, create a new set, click Import, paste, keep Tab between term and definition and New line between cards, then import.

Is the Anki to Quizlet converter free?

Yes. There is no account, no limit on the number of decks and nothing to install.

Is my deck uploaded?

No. The .apkg file is opened by your browser on your own device. The cards are never sent to a server.

Can I convert a shared deck I downloaded from AnkiWeb?

Yes. A shared deck downloaded from AnkiWeb is an .apkg file, so you can choose it here directly without importing it into Anki first.

What happens to cloze cards?

Each cloze note becomes one Quizlet card. The term shows the text with the deletions blanked out as [...] (or the hint, if there is one) and the definition shows the full text.

Are images and audio converted?

No, only text. A side that is only an image becomes [image], and the page tells you how many cards had images or audio.

Can I go from Quizlet to Anki instead?

Yes. The Quizlet to Anki converter on the home page turns a copied Quizlet set into an Anki .apkg deck.

Going the other way? Use the Quizlet to Anki converter.
